Calling All HARC Members – We Need Your Help!
We’re inviting all club members to help with setup on Saturday morning at 9:00 AM as we kick off Field Day 2025 at our Cowie Hill repeater site.
This year’s Field Day simulates a city-wide wireless communication outage in Halifax. The goal: test how well we can maintain amateur radio contact with other sites across North America when all other systems are down. It’s the perfect opportunity to demonstrate the real-world value of amateur radio in times of crisis.
What to Expect
- 24-hour ARRL Field Day operating event
- On-air communication tests with HATS, DARC, and emergency partners
- Hands-on radio operation and setup
- Public engagement opportunities and demos throughout the day

- 9:00 AM – Equipment setup
- 3:00 PM – Field Day operations begin
- 6:00 PM – Supper

Hello, I am a retired radio and telecommunications technician. I started with Maritime Tel & Tel mobile radio shop in 1980. I have seen a lot of the pre-computer age of communications. In the early 1980’s I worked on Sable Island installing proto-type VHF-UHF cross band full duplex repeater links between the mainland and the oil rigs working off of Sable Island with the island being the middle link. I also have many other communication stories. i have worked around the world and have seen and experienced a few real-world system-wide outage and failures. One outage in 1975 caused all of Nova Scotia to have no toll (long distance) telephone connectivity to the rest of Canada and the world. I live on the panisula of Halifax but I don’t have a car and I have mobility issues. I would like to go. The bus gets me close but I would have to walk with my rollator from the bus stop to the field day. It sounds interesting.
