2025 WIN Award
Awarded to Bruce Wade, VE1NB
The ‘Win’ Award was first introduced in memory of Win Hartlin, VE1WIN* — a remarkable individual whose dedication and passion helped shape the Halifax Amateur Radio Club in ways that are still felt today. Each year, the award is given to someone who embodies that same spirit of service, generosity, and commitment to our community.
This year, in 2025, we are proud to present the Win Award to Bruce Wade, VE1NB.
Bruce has been tireless in his efforts to bring the museum ships alive on the ham bands. These efforts included organizing numerous POTA activations aboard the CSS Acadia and HMCS Sackville and helping amateurs — including many first-timers — experience HF operation from these historic vessels. In this way, Bruce has opened new doors for countless operators.
His leadership didn’t stop there. Bruce coordinated major excursions to George’s Island in both 2024 and 2025. These were full-day events that invited both Club and non-Club members to set up stations, make contacts, and enjoy operating from a unique and beautiful location.
In partnership with the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and the Canadian Naval Trust, Bruce has also introduced visitors, youth, and scouting groups to amateur radio — sparking curiosity, excitement, and new interest in our hobby.
His dedication has strengthened our community, welcomed new operators, and reengaged those returning to radio after time away. It also must be noted that Bruce always has been available with his extraordinary technical skills to help hams new and old in setting up or improving their stations and antenna systems. Likewise, when they needed to be disassembled and taken down, he was there to help, including in many cases helping them sell their surplus equipment.
Bruce, on behalf of the Halifax Amateur Radio Club — thank you. Your enthusiasm, leadership, and commitment have made our Club stronger, more active, and more vibrant. Congratulations on receiving the Win Award. It is truly well deserved.
Foot Note: *Win’s call sign, VE1WIN, was reassigned following his passing and is now held by Peter Whalen.
