A Meaningful Year – 90 Years Since the Moose River Rescue

This year’s activation carries added significance as we mark the 90th anniversary of the 1936 Moose River Mining Disaster and rescue—one of the most historic and widely followed rescue efforts in Canadian history.

The Moose River rescue was a defining moment for communications. For the first time, live radio broadcasts brought a disaster response into homes across the country, connecting the public to the unfolding story in real time. It’s a powerful reminder of the role radio continues to play in emergency communications today.
