Exploring Georges Island: A HARC POTA Event

If you’re looking for an exciting way to spend July 20th, mark your calendars for the HARC POTA event on Georges Island in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Event Overview

The event will take place on Georges Island, a historically rich location managed by Parks Canada. We have exclusive access to ten designated sites across the island where participants can set up their individual POTA (Parks On The Air) stations. Some spots include picnic table access, ensuring a comfortable setup for radio operations amidst the island’s scenic beauty.

We anticipate setting up seven stations, and nine operators have been confirmed. Including guests, we have eighteen enthusiastic participants ready to make this event memorable.

Logistics and Considerations

Before you pack your gear, here are some essential logistical details to keep in mind:

  • Shelter and Setup: Georges Island offers minimal natural shade, so consider bringing appropriate sun protection. Due to archaeological considerations, stakes should be kept short (twelve inches) and minimal in quantity. Avoid tying off to trees or man-made objects.
  • Supplies: There’s no public water source on the island, so bring your own. Pack in all food and ensure that any garbage is packed out.
  • Facilities: Composting toilets are available, and please respect the island’s facilities and historical sites during your visit.
  • Lighthouse Access: While the island boasts a historic lighthouse, access to the immediate area is restricted as it falls under Coast Guard property. However, the lighthouse can still be activated for Lighthouse On The Air enthusiasts!
  • Ferry Information: Participants will depart from Halifax with Ambassatours at 10 a.m. and return by 3:10 p.m. Tickets cost $23.08 round trip (including Parks Canada fees), and can be purchased online using the discount code CA4838 for tracking purposes. Lunch options are available for purchase onboard.
  • Additional Ferry Run: If demand allows, there may be a later return ferry at around 5 p.m. Be sure to check with Ambassatours for updates closer to the event date.
  • Radio Operations: This is a bring-your-own-radio event, perfect for testing your equipment in a unique location surrounded by history and natural beauty.
