Brian Allen, VA1CC, Honored with Life Membership Award for Outstanding Contributions to Amateur Radio
On 15 July 2026, the Halifax Amateur Radio Club (HARC) celebrated a momentous occasion as Brian Allen, VA1CC, was granted a distinguished life membership award. This prestigious honour recognizes Brian’s exceptional achievements and unwavering commitment to the world of amateur radio. With a remarkable career spanning more than five decades, Brian’s invaluable contributions have strengthened the club, mentored new operators, and inspired fellow enthusiasts. Let us delve into his journey, highlighting his remarkable accomplishments in amateur radio.
Brian Allen’s passion for amateur radio took root early and has never faded. A contester and DXer since 1968, he has confirmed contacts with 279 countries and logged more than 23,000 QSOs — a record of skill, persistence, and genuine love for the hobby that few can match.
Within the HARC community, Brian became a respected leader and dedicated member. Serving as President for at least five years, and later as Past President, he guided the club through periods of both growth and challenge. Notably, he led HARC through the COVID years by moving meetings online via Zoom, ensuring that the club remained connected when in-person gatherings were not possible. His leadership also saw the club through two major station moves — from Agricola Street to Bayers Road, and later to Station 50 — efforts that demanded careful planning, hard work, and a steady hand.
Brian’s contributions to club operations and public service have been far-reaching. As Station Manager for several years, he helped keep the club’s facilities running smoothly. He served as Field Day manager on multiple occasions, helping HARC achieve a first-place finish in Canada and a second-place standing in North America — a proud milestone for the club. As President, he also organized and ran communications support for community events including the Bikeathon, Walkathon, Halifax Days, and other public activities that put amateur radio in service to the broader community.
Recognizing the importance of education and the next generation of operators, Brian has long been an instructor for HARC’s amateur radio certification classes and serves as a government-certified examiner for new amateur operators in Nova Scotia. He continues to serve on the Brit Fader Scholarship Committee, supporting students and the future of the hobby. He has also provided technical support to fellow hams, worked extensively with previous QSL managers to establish more efficient methods of handling large volumes of QSL cards, and, with Barry Manual, helped establish the club’s HATS program.
Brian’s dedication extends to emergency preparedness and heritage as well. He completed EMO courses in management at the Emergency Operations Centre, including message handling, and has held a climbers certificate in support of antenna and tower work. An active volunteer with the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, he played a key role in establishing the museum’s amateur radio presence and for several years ran and operated museum ships on weekends — preserving maritime wireless history and sharing it with the public.
