Nova Scotia APRS News

The following information is for anyone who may wish to
experiment with APRS (Auto Positioning Reporting System).

There is an APRS digipeater now operating in the Truro
area on 144.390 MHz and is ported to the internet via
VE1LV running UI-View. An APRS mobile or fixed station
will be ported to the internet when the unproto is RELAY.
Most mobiles run RELAY,WIDE . A fixed station can just
monitor as well and see what activity is relayed from
VE1LV.

To get started you need APRS software. There are two
most commonly used, UI-View and WinAPRS. One can download
UI-View at:

http://www.peaksys.fsnet.co.uk/

Those wanting WinAPRS let me know and I will send the
zipped file to you, the address is very long.. HA!
Besides the software, it is also goes without saying one
requires a TNC.

If you wish to run APRS from your mobile there is the
TinyTrakII for $30 USD that is a kit consisting of a circuit
board about 2 X 11/2. It goes between a GPS and a VHF radio,
taking your position from the GPS and converting it to send
out as a packet on the VHF radio.

Runing your standard packet program you may monitor the
on 144.390 MHz but it will not create the map to show
the location.

Thanks to Allen, VE1INN, I have a Truro map in two sizes,
a Maritime and an Eastern Canada map for anyone who
wishes same, just ask.

Lastly I reveived a lot of help and suggestions so don't be
afraid to ask and I will endeavour to help or go to further
fields to find out for you. With the facilities now in
operation and a APRS digipeater running in Halifax at
Beaverbank there should be coverage that includes the HRM
up through Highway#102 to Truro and on up into the Cobequid
Pass.
